Workshop with Max Hale Coastal Scenes

Born in Bushey, Herts in 1954, I was brought up in Harrow, Middlesex and attended Harrow School of Art where I gained a qualification in FineArt. I had some wonderful tuition from one particular painter there a certain Ken Howard OBE RA a fortunate start to my career.

My qualification earned me a place as apprentice illustrator in a London studio working on books and magazines often with incredibly short deadlines. After three years I decided that my true aspirations weren't being met and I found a way back into the fine art scene. Painting solidly alone and with various art groups I gained valuable experience. Two tutors stand out for me; Denis Syrett a former President of the ROI and Rod Hamer a brilliant but modest artist and excellent jazz trumpeter.

My exhibiting was becoming more fruitful and my process took me from watercolour to oil, acrylic back to dry mediums I have developed my own styles which are loose, painterly and expressive.

Moving from London to Buckinghamshire in 1978 where I had my family, then to Wiltshire in 2008.

Success in my own work led naturally to teaching art to adults starting in 1992 firstly in portraiture then all genres as time went on. My illustration and drawing skills were a reliable source of background material to teach as was my approach to painting learned in the latter years.

I now not only paint, a winner of many awards, hung in London galleries but write regularly for magazines with a book in progress, demonstrating to art societies and working as reviewer for art materials.
