Joyce Thorn
Joyce’s interest in painting began in her school days. She then went on to study at Aston School of Art until the outbreak of World War II.
However, her interest continued throughout the war, marriage and bringing up a family. Later, having more time, Joyce joined several art societies, tutored classes and taught herself to sketch and paint. She particularly liked sketching with ink in preference to pencil, and thus began her present day practice of line and wash, often using a stick and ink.
Joyce and her late husband founded the Harbour’s Art Society, which had biannual exhibitions in Chichester for over 30 years. She has exhibited widely and sold many paintings, some worldwide.
She has gained many awards during her career. Her subjects are generally taken from the Sussex landscape and particularly old cottages and barns, etc. Joyce uses her sketchbook notes as inspiration for further paintings.
